Are We All Butterflies?

This is a Mayan symbol called the Galactic Butterfly which represents the center of our galaxy where the souls of our ancestors have gone. Back to the "One Giver of Movement and Measure" called Hun'Nab'Ku. It is said that their souls, on occasion come back to visit as butterflies.

Are we all butterflies?

The following passage is from Norie Huddle's book, Butterfly:

The caterpillar’s new cells are called "imaginal cells." They resonate at a
different frequency. They are so totally different from the caterpillar cells
that his immune system thinks they are enemies... and gobbles them up
---Chomp! Gulp! But these new imaginal cells continue to appear, more
and more of them! Pretty soon, the caterpillar's immune system cannot
destroy them fast enough. More and more of the imaginal cells survive.
And then an amazing thing happens! The little tiny lonely imaginal cells
start to clump together, into friendly little groups. They all resonate
together at the same frequency, passing information from one to another.
Then, after a while, another amazing thing happens! The clumps of
imaginal cells start to cluster together!... a long string of clumping and
clustering imaginal cells, all resonating at the same frequency, all
passing information from one to another there inside the chrysalis.

A wave of Good News travels throughout the system-- Lurches and
heaves...but not yet a butterfly.  Then at some point, the entire long
string of imaginal cells suddenly realizes all together that it is Something
Different from the caterpillar. Something New! Something Wonderful!…
and in that realization is the shout of the birth of the butterfly!
Happy Birthday Butterfly!!!

Since the butterfly now "knows" that it is a butterfly, the little tiny
imaginal cells no longer have to do all those things individual cells
must do. Now they are part of a multi-celled organism-- A FAMILY
who can share the work.
Each new butterfly cell can take on a different job.  There is something
for everyone to do, and everyone is important.  And each cell begins
to do just that very thing it is most drawn to do. And every other cell
encourages it to do just that.  A great way to organize a butterfly! And
a great way to organize a butterfly movement!

In Barbara Marx Hubbard's book, Conscious Evolution, she states:
As people started waking up, they became imaginal disks in the body of
society. The environmental movement, the antiwar movement, the Apollo
space program, the women's movement, the civil rights and human rights
movements, new music, transcendental meditation, yoga, and mind-
expanding substances all encouraged a young generation to act as
instruments of social change--striving to birth the still-invisible societal
butterfly. And often when new leaders did step forward, they were
attacked by society's immune system fighting to maintain the old social
order of the caterpillar: witness the assassinations of Ghandi,
John F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr.

I think this is closer to the Tao than any other philosophy I know.  I
have been telling people from the beginning that the butterflies are
Taoists, having never read the Tao te Ching.  In December 1997 at the
Earth Rainbow Network's first meeting, I met a gentleman and told him
many of my stories, and for each one he showed me its counterpart in the
Tao. He was somewhat of an expert in the Tao and that experience was
my first real confirmation that my notion was right all along. You can't
explain the mystery in words; you have to experience it.

Now order is emerging out of chaos just as the butterfly emerges
from the chrysalis. Chaordic science tells us that when the pieces
of the puzzle come together there will be a new synergy greater than the
sum of the parts, and a new unpredictability.  It was this energy and what
appeared as unpredictability that had some people concerned about me.
Believe me, I had a formidable task to deal with. Fritjov Capra was
amused when I told him it would be ironic if a butterfly group gets to prove
the "butterfly effect", which he discusses in his book, The Web of Life.
Last Friday he called, offered a grant that I could apply for through his
Center for Ecoliteracy, and wants to meet over coffee the first week of
March. He told me, "Your project sounds very impressive and would be
a good candidate (for a grant)."
There are literally butterfly people, emerged and now emerging, all
over the world. They are the imaginals that Norie Huddle, Barbara
Marx Hubbard, and others are talking about. All that is needed is
the acknowledgement that this is all really happening."
The noble and very British organization National Geographic was
quoted as saying that Beauty will save the world.  "Beauty seems to be
an intrinsic part of nature, and perhaps even the organizing principle of
reality. Scientists, in testing their theories, invariably find that the simplest,
most elegant, most beautiful equation, is the correct one. Rainbows,
butterflies, and the periodic table are some examples of intrinsic beauty.
The world will be saved by beauty." -National Geographic-
"We may... come to see them as embodying all the beauty and
complexity of nature itself.  It is said that a butterfly can, with a flap of its
wings, change the world . . . that the ripple it sends out can spawn a
hurricane."  -National Geographic Dec. 93-  -Read about the butterfly
effect in the Web of Life by Fritjov Capra.

"Indeed, the ideas and the visions we now produce could be the
butterflies of the ultimate decade.  It is up to each of us to flap our wings
and to make use of the chaos of our times to launch our bifurcating
societies along the humanistic path."  Ervin Laszlo on the Butterfly Effect
of individual action from The Choice-Evolution or Extinction-1994

"Could we have a genetically based affinity for butterflies, which are the
most salient demonstrations of metamorphosis present in the environments
where humans have evolved?  If genetically encoded, does the expression
of this image require an environmental trigger?  Could the archetype remain
latent, within our subconscious mind, until some element in our immediate
environment call it forth?"   -Cultures of Habit by Gary Paul Nabham-

"Once upon a time, I dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither,
to all intents and purposes a butterfly. . .Now I do not know whether I was
then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now butterfly
dreaming I am a man."  -Chuang-tzu-

I have often wondered about the when or what that causes us to recognize
our true essence, our butterfly nature. Does the caterpillar look up from its
munching and regard the butterfly soaring above the bush, only to forage
faster and further down the leaf so as to hasten its own becoming? She
makes little wing like movements with her fingers. "Very graceful, beautiful
things...like so…. but also change, how do you say?... transformation from
ugly caterpillar to beautiful butterfly, something that goes from crawling to
flying.  She opens her hands into a butterfly.

I recite for her the famous lines, " Once upon a time, I Chuang-tzu, dreamt
I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither, to all intents and purposes a
butterfly... Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a
butterfly, or whether I am now butterfly dreaming I am a man.  "She nods
enthusiastically. "But now we come to the dream part. How would you
explain that? Why the confusion between Chuang-tzu and the butterfly?"

"Oh, that is easy," she declares, clapping her hands. "The man is a higher
stage than the butterfly. So he wakes up as Chuang-tzu, still confused,
because he has been dreaming he belonged to a lesser stage. He is waking
up from the old dream."

"I know where the new archetype will come from. China is the great cocoon
for the birth of the new archetype.  It will come out of our hearts when they
break open. Then the dream will become real, and the new archetype,
the butterfly will fly all over the Earth." -from A Mythic Life by Jean Houston

It is only in the intentional silence of vigil and meditation, or in the quiet
places of Nature, that we encounter the song of the universe. Like the wind
through telegraph wires, this song echoes along the pathways of the cosmic
web: it includes the celestial spinning of the planets, as well as the hum of
insects and the dancing song of the grass; it includes the song of all the
ancestors and spirits as well as the beating of our own hearts.
–Caitlin Matthews
"Rarely if ever do we get a chance to restore to nature even a tiny part
of what we have taken away." –National Geographic Magazine Dec 93-

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can
change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has". -Margaret Mead
/ quote from origination of Earth Day in 1969-

"Everyone has their own 'personal tree' to sit in. Life's circumstances
sometimes seem overwhelming, but we must remember the amazing power
of love. Just as the ripples in the ocean shape and form the land - from the
cliffs to the tiny grains of sand - so do our actions, words, and thoughts
shape and form our reality. Even more, ripples joining one another form
tidal waves that change the planet. If we make sure that our every thought,
word, and action are based in love then the ripples we create will bring about
positive change for a positive future."   Julia Butterfly

"Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it!  Boldness has
genius, power, and magic in it."  - Goethe -

"Come to the edge," He said. They said, "We are afraid." "Come to
the edge," He said. They came. He pushed them... and they flew.
–Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918) French novelist, critic.

"The real test of compassion is not what we say in abstract discussions
but how we conduct ourselves in daily life."   "In our struggle for freedom
truth is the only weapon we possess."  -His Holiness the Dalai Lama-

"One who is willing to give one's body for the Earth, and do so with love,
is the only one fit to be steward of the Earth"  -Lao Tzu-

This we know: All things are connected like the blood, which unites
one family. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls
the sons of the Earth; man did not weave the web of life. He is merely
a strand on it. Whatever he does to the web he does to himself.
-Chief Seattle-

The World is full of people that have stopped listening to themselves
or have listened only to neighbors to learn what they ought to do, how
they ought to behave, and what the values are that they should be
living for.  –Joseph Campbell-

"There can be no happiness if the things we believe in are different
from the things we do."  - Albert Camus

If the world is to be healed through human efforts, I am convinced it will
be by ordinary people, people whose love for this life is even greater than
their fear. People who can open to the web of life that called us into being,
and who can rest in the vitality of that larger body.  -Joanna Macy-

Please help spread the word, attitude makes a the difference in the
direction things take.
